Justin Majid

Justin is descended from Islander (Boigu, Badu and Horn Islands), Aboriginal and European heritage. He grew up on Horn Island and in Cairns and graduated with a Certificate III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Art from Tropical north Qld TAFE in 2009. He has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally and is regarded as an upcoming Islander artist to watch. Justin’s works are rich in symbolism and local legend; his prints depict an extraordinary variety of sea creatures and maritime heroes.

Crocodiles, dugongs, hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, skates, crabs, octopi and many species of fish are depicted swimming in ornate fields of decorative patterns that are specific to various families and regions. These creations stories are the heart and soul of Torres Strait Islander culture.
