This print was produced at the same time as Heather’s print The Land Lord and share the same story.
In these two works, I wanted to have a little bit of fun because most of the stories I tell in my prints are very sad. I decided that for The Landlady and The Landlord, I wanted to be happy, to show people through my work that you can have jokes as well. I don’t want to see people in the gallery being sad and walking out with these worries in the mind.
The Land Lady, the Queen of England, she’s always walking around serious, so I did a little bit of joking. She has two koalas instead of her two dogs, her corgis. I decided to put Big Ben in the background, but the time is going backwards.
The Land Lord, he’s just boiling up because the Queen wanted him to pick a nice place in Australia, but he picked out the wrong spot in the middle of a swamp and he’s really angry. There’s early settlers and some Indigenous elders in the background, and in the sky all the ancestors are looking down on them from Australia.
