Dhoeri displays Glen Mackie (Kei Kalak)’s exquisite carving skills
Artist’s statement:
Dhoeri were headdresses used during warfare by Torres Strait Islanders. Each clan group has their own distinctive design which could aid in identifying friend from foe in the hectic frenzy of battle. The big elaborate dhoeri was worn during ceremonial dancing, and they are still used to this day. The small dhoeri were worn during warfare, and the one depicted here is the latter.
