Description
Gep is Meuram language name for the remora, commonly known as the suckerfish. Torres Strait Islanders once used gep in traditional hunting methods by using their ability to attach themselves to other marine animals. They are known for their distinctive first dorsal fins, taking the form of a modified oval, sucker-like organ with slat-like structures that open and close to create a suction which holds firmly against the skin of larger marine animals. Whilst diving around the reef if you see a gep, there is usually a larger marine creature nearby, which then warns us of any danger nearby such as sharks.
