As a Kuku Yalanji elder from Hopevale, Queensland, a coastal community about 40 minutes’ drive north of Cooktown, Roy’s country is some of the most pristine beautiful coastline near Cape Bedford, known for some of the purest deposits of silica in the world. As such, mining and commerce have dominated the landscape in recent years, attracting growth and prosperity to the region. Mining has also contributed some instability and social problems.
Maami Ganaar (Cheeky Crocodile) is about the rich reef life which contributes to the livelihood and well-being of the Kuku Yalanji. With restrictions now in place by multinational companies and private land holders, it is not as easy to access beaches and reefs. Lurking in the mangroves and beach shallows are the opportunistic and ever-present saltwater crocodiles, camouflaged by the reflections on the water, ready to pounce on their victim.
